Visitation
(24" x 30", oil on canvas, 1981; private collection)
The end of all exploring is to return home with insights gained from our travels. Here golden beings of light descend from a pyramid-like structure that has appeared over a quiet harbor. To Robert McCall, the image represents a benevolent race that has come to live among us. "Maybe in the future we will be living on Earth with new inhabitants among us," says McCall, "intelligent beings who have discovered us and chosen to live among us peacefully."

Space Wheel

Space Wheel (detail)
A Space City concept, perhaps a century from now. In the foreground is a segment of the rim of the giant rotating wheel; in the background above is a similar city. The centrifugal force caused the rim, where most of the city's activities take place. As one moves toward the hub these forces decrease until zero gravity, weightless condition prevails at the center.

Floating City over the Arizona Desert
In 1971 McCall Began painting a series of what he calls "floating cities," gravity free cities capable of moving from place to place. "my thrust was to paint an inviting scene, a believable scene that would intrigue the viewer and cause him to wonder about some future possibilities of life on Earth."

A painting commemorating Edward H. White II, who, in 1965, became the first American to perform an extravehicular activity (EVA) or "space walk." This portrait in space became a memorial painting after White died in the 1967 ground fire that killed him and astronauts Virgil Grissom and Roger Chaffee while they were testing their Apollo spacecraft.

Apollo 13 Explosion (large detail)
En route to the Moon, a fuel cell on the Apollo 13 service module exploded, severely damaging the craft and aborting the mission's landing. Working with flashlights to conserve the little remaining energy of the Apollo's power system, astronauts Lovell, Swigart, and Haise were able to perform the crucial tasks that would enable them to bring the damaged spacecraft safely back to Earth.

The floating city rests on stilt-like legs that support is when it is not moving from place to place. In the foreground, people move through the sky with ease wearing individual flight belts much like those of Buck Rogers. The planet in the background suggests a time when we may be able to move the satellites and planets into closer juxtaposition to Earth.
