A unique collection of over 400 paintings, drawings, monoprints, and stone lithographs - the work of the impassioned career of Robert McCall
Spanning more than 50 years, perhaps the most stunning portion of the collection is that which documents our nation's astonishing space exploration from the early 1950's to the present. Over the decades, McCall has used his front-row seat provided by NASA to capture the sprit and energy of the golden age of space exploration.
However, that is only a portion of the special collection. It also includes McCall's monumental oil paintings of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (which have been on loan to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum since its opening). In addition, McCall's work for the movie industry should not be overlooked. An art director for Disney's "The Black Hole," McCall created artwork for these films: "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," and "Tora, Tora, Tora."
A further aspect of this collection is the 25 commemorative stamps McCall created for the US Postal Service. All are celebrations of our national achievements in space. Lastly, this collection includes a substantial body of work that anticipates the future- optimistic and inspiring visions of things to come.
With the collection already recognized as a Smithsonian affiliate, this unique, valuable, extensive and inspiring body of work is worthy of an independent museum building or a wing of an existing one. It will be offered to the institution that best recognizes its exciting possibilities, aesthetic qualities and dramatic recording of events in the history of our great nation.
